Case studies are commonly utilized in both graduate and undergraduate courses. They are also employed within graduate level research projects as part of the methodology, which usually includes qualitative methods. However, in all cases, they should not be treated as a simple essay because they require a level of analysis not typically found in the common essay.
Case studies are intended to be fully analyzed and this analysis should be recorded in a well-written report that discusses the process employed. Finally, the writer is expected to offer several original recommendations or courses of action based on the analysis produced.
Furthermore, while outside sources are sometimes allowed, the case study itself should be relied on as the primary source. Unless a case study is the actual intent of the project, the case study should always provide all or the majority of the material research.
